Sugar-free low GI fruit spread to keep those zits away

Raspberry Jam
If you ask me what’s my favorite breakfast, I’ll tell you it’s jam on toast. Yes, I’m boring like that. But I’m leery that jam can be too sweet and so I’m selective too. Last year, I found St Dalfour’s fruit spread and between my son and me, we’ve consumed a number of bottles now. They’re made of real fruits and juice concentrate, and are absolutely delicious. The best thing? This vegan jam is low in glycemic index (GI) and that means it’s pretty safe for my skin.

Link between GI and acne
What’s the big deal about low GI you ask? Well, the GI provides a measure of how quickly blood sugar levels (levels of glucose in the blood) rise after eating a particular type of food. The reason you want to keep your blood sugar low is because an elevated blood sugar stimulates your body to pump out insulin, which then triggers a cascade of hormonal effects, including elevated levels of androgens or acne-causing male hormones and excess oil, which lead to clogged pores and breakouts.

So frequent consumption of high GI foods will almost certainly influence or aggravate acne production. If you’re acne-prone and love jam, be mindful of what you’re eating. This one from St Dalfour is pretty safe for it hasn’t caused me any skin issues.

Special French recipe
Anyway, on top of this jam being low in GI, it taste great on toasted multigrain bread. I’ve tried a few flavors under that brand and so far, this raspberry one is my favorite. You actually get bits of the raspberry in the jam!

According to the company, their jam is made based on a good old French recipe using special concentrated grape juice and this is what is stated on the ingredient list of the Raspberry fruit spread: Raspberries 55%, Grape Juice Concentrate, Fruit Pectin. And the best part is, this fruit spread is free of sugar, preservatives, gluten, artificial flavors as well as colors.

Huh, this is interesting. I’ve pretty much always considered myself a skincare know-it-all, but I had absolutely no idea about the influence glycemic index has on acne prone skin.
That St Dalfour jam sounds too good to be true (especially for that price), thanks for the info and the iHerb promo! I’ll make sure to order bunchload of these jams, haha.

At one stage of my life, I suffered from hormonal acne and I traced it to my diet. Since then, I’ve been careful and avoid diary, sugar, and high GI food as far as possible.

I had a look at the nutritional information on the jar. Per 100g it is 52g sugars. They might be natural fruit sugar, but how is 52% sugar low GI?
