What you shouldn’t drink for beauty sake
Tuesday, 9 September 2008I don’t know about you but of all the beauty tips that I hear so often, the one I detest most is to drink eight glasses of plain water! I mean, water is bland and tasteless. While I always try to drink it, I can’t always drink that much per day. So I was very glad to learn from this article, the wonders of water, that we no longer need to worry about drinking specific amounts of water. Instead, we can simply satisfy our thirst with any beverage.
Well, that sounds good except that you still want to be careful about what you drink as any beverage may not be good news for our skin. In fact, some beverage can prevent our body from making efficient use of minerals and vitamins, hence contributing to tired-looking greasy skin with spots.
Sugar sweetened soft drinks can cause wrinkles & promote acne
Your can of aerated drink, or that fruit punch maybe tastier but it could result in more skin problems because sugar is bad news for our skin as I’ve written in my earlier entry cut down salt and sugar intake to look younger. It can promote wrinkles and leathery looking skin too because sugar hastens the breakdown of collagen and elastin as it triggers a process in the body called glycation.
Not only that, according to the book Gorgeous Skin In 30 Days by Erica Angyal, such sugar content can produce a surge of an insulin-like growth factor called IGF-1. This can lead to an excess of male hormones, which causes pores in the skin to secrete sebum, a greasy substance that attracts acne-promoting bacteria. Also, IGF-1 causes skin cells known as keratinocytes to multiply, a process that is associated with acne.
Alcohol dehydrates our skin
In my entry on Skin Sins, I mentioned that alcohol is said to be a diuretic and so it dehydrates our bodies, resulting in skin that loses its plump, firm and dewy appearance. In fact, our face can appear puffier and our undereye becomes darker because alcohol is a vasodilator which opens blood vessels. Drinkers also have a sallowness in their faces, a direct result of an overstressed liver having difficulty with its detoxifying duties. And alcohol actually promotes the growth of “bad collagen” or scar tissue in both the skin and liver.
Caffeine contributes to dark undereye circles
I also highlighted in the same entry that caffeine affects our body the way alcohol does. Hence, excess caffeine can cause dehydration, disrupt sleep, trigger stress hormones and because it engorges viens, it can also cause broken capillaries. Too much caffeine also contribute to dark undereye circles.
Drink fresh vegetable fruit juice for their beauty minerals
If you dislike drinking plain water, drink fresh fruit juice instead! It would be even better when mixed with vegetables because both fruits and vegetables are high in antioxidants and are loaded with beauty minerals such as silica, magnesium, calcium and sulpher which are important for good skin. In fact, I think if anything should replace water, this should be the beverage because a mix of fresh vegetable fruit juice would also contain lots of vitamin C.
Water is necessary to flush out toxins from the skin
Well, the bottom line is you don’t necessarily have to drink up to eight glasses of plain water per day if you’re also drinking fresh juices but you can’t avoid drinking water altogether. Like it or not, water plays an important role to keep our system healthy. In fact, drinking water in adequate amounts is necessary to flush out toxins out of the body via the excretory system. This is essential to prevent toxins from building up in the body and escape through skin pores which can contribute to acne. However, note that drinking water alone cannot prevent or get rid of acne as acne is caused by the overproduction of sebum or hormones but by flushing the body internally with water, acne breakouts are less likely to occur due to toxins released through the skin.

Great article!!
I know what you mean about water being a bit boring. Sometimes I add a few drops of unsweetened lemon juice for flavor.
Jen: Ah, you remind me about lemon! I add that sometimes but maybe I added a tad more, it usually makes me very hungry!

Depends on the size of the glass but typically 8 glasses translate to 2000ml which would mean 4 of those 500ml bottles.

hi! Renew rose hip oil not only good for scars and uneven skin tone but it can also use it on our lips and i found the effects is much better then any other lip balms. don’t worry it is very safe to eat. I’ve very dry skin, usually i will apply Renew moisturising cream after rose hip oil, the effects is fantastic! One more thing, only genuine natural ingredients will attract small insects such as ants and bees. if your skin care attract them which mean you are using genuine products.
